    You land at Sangster International and the van is already outside. Bags in, and we drive straight out of town — the west end is a better first look at Jamaica than an airport hotel.

    Seven Mile Beach at one end, limestone cliffs at the other. We stay on the West End, where the water is deep enough to jump into and the sunset is an event people actually turn up for. Two nights to land, swim and adjust to the pace.

  3. White cottages and a pool set back from the sea at Treasure Beach

    A working fishing coast with no resort strip: painted pirogues pulled up on the sand and guesthouses run by the families who live there. Three nights, long enough for a boat out to the bar built on a sandbar a kilometre offshore, a morning on the Black River, and the rum tour inland at Appleton.

  4. Green hills and houses above Kingston, seen from the air

    The capital, and the reason this is not a beach holiday. Trenchtown Culture Yard, the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road, patties from a counter with no menu. Then up to the dub club where the sound systems are on a hillside, the perfect sunset spot for cultural vibes and natural fruit juices.

  5. Wooden cabins on the rocks above a mountain stream at Irish Town

    Twenty kilometres out of Kingston and 900 metres up, the temperature drops ten degrees and the city noise stops. Two nights above the cloud line: the School Of Vision rasta camp, and Blue Mountain coffee where it actually grows.

  6. Reef and turquoise shallows off a beach on the Portland coast

    We take the long way round the eastern tip rather than doubling back over the mountains. This is the wettest and greenest side of the island. Three nights for the reef, the Blue Hole, and jerk at Boston Beach, where it was invented.
